Statically Charged
(When my curls weren’t my curls)
Statically charged, and my hair didn’t feel right.
London trip in my red happy hat, acrylic,
faux fur fabulous leopard coat.
I charged my curls without knowing,
and when I took my hat off
my hair felt stuck to my head.
Free flowing my curls felt flattened, as if straightened —
in the mirror they looked great, but felt terrible.
Tight instead of loose, not me at all.
My hair wasn’t my hair,
the curls of someone else.
Statically charged by keeping warm from the cold,
hair that wasn’t mine.
Man made fibres did that,
and I won’t do it again —
a great day, but my curls were not my curls.
Footnote: A neurodivergent sensitivity to texture, shape, and sensation that shaped the whole day.
